S.T.A.R.S MISSION STATEMENT:  To provide excellent extra-curricular activities for students in a loving, caring, atmosphere. To teach these activities form a godly perspective in a Christian setting. To benefit ongoing educational programs at BCS through the fees charged for S.T.A.R.S. activities.

Our Instructors included:

KARATE    Mr. Jim Bleech is a Second Degree Black Belt in Songham Tae Kwon Do.  He holds a 5th Degree certification in Krav Maga self defense and is a Certified Training Instructor.  In the 2006 Nationals, he took 1st place in sparring and 3rd place in forms.  Jim was the 2007 State Champion in weapons.  He will be assisted by his daughter Megan, also a Certified Training Instructor with a Second Degree Black Belt in Songham Tae Kwon Do.

PIANO    Dr. Anatoli Khatchatourov was Professor of Music at Azerbaijan State Conservatory, USSR, for 17 years.  He taught courses in polyphony, harmony, and music history, and directed Masters and Doctoral candidates.   He was also the Music Editor of the Azerbaijan branch of the USSR Musical Foundation, with a library of over 15,000.  Dr. Anatoli has written scores for 14 films, and has written several instructional and research publications.  He has been teaching piano lessons in Jacksonville since 1991.

GUITAR   

William Smith is a graduate of Beaches Chapel School and a 2008 graduate of Fletcher High School. He has been playing guitar since he was in the Sixth grade. He also plays base, drums, and keyboard and is teaching himself violin. He has been in the Beaches Chapel Church Youth band since the 7th grade and is now its leader. William is also a member of the Church's worship band and the Primer band, which is our college ministry. William has been part of the Youth Quake Live band for seven years and will assume the role of leader and band intern for their 2008 -2009 season.

DANCE 

TAP    BCS Alumni Tasha Butcher has 17 years of dance training including ballet, lyrical, tap, modern and worship dance.  She received instruction from a variety of studios in Jacksonville including Nancydance and Jacksonville University.  Tasha was an Assistant Teacher in dance for 6 years before going on to teach adult ballet.  

 

BALLET  Another BCS graduate, Alexandra Smith,  has been dancing since she was 4, when her doctor recommended dance to correct a hip problem.  She received training at Nancydance and East Coast Ballet, and was chosen for the role of Clara twice for the Florida Ballet Nutcracker.  She served as cast member and leader for the Youthquake Live Dance Team, and taught at Shoshanna Arts.  Alexandra is currently attending JU on an academic/dance scholarship.
